Anatoly Yakovenko's idea and Proof of History

In 2017, Qualcomm systems engineer Anatoly Yakovenko recognized that existing blockchains were bottlenecked by node clock synchronization. While Bitcoin and Ethereum processed under 30 transactions per second, traditional payment rails handled tens of thousands. Yakovenko designed Proof of History (PoH), a cryptographic clock mechanism allowing nodes to verify the passage of time without waiting for network consensus. High-performance architecture: Sealevel and Gulf Stream

Solana's high-performance architecture pairs Proof of History with Proof of Stake, utilizing Sealevel to execute smart contracts in parallel across GPU threads. Enhanced by Gulf Stream transaction forwarding and Turbine block propagation, Solana achieves theoretical capacity up to 65,000 transactions per second with average transaction fees below $0.01. This performance enabled vibrant ecosystems across decentralized exchanges, liquid staking, Web3 gaming, and compressed NFT minting.

Outages, FTX and the network's recovery

Despite experiencing technical outages during periods of extreme network congestion, Solana demonstrated significant resilience. Following the 2022 market contraction, developer activity and institutional interest rebounded strongly, solidified by client diversity projects like Firedancer.
